Yet another reason Chicago is the greatest Chow town around.....Midway airport!
I fly often for my job and pass through about a dozen or so airports on a regular basis (terrible food choices) with Detroit having the worst food and Bergstrom in Austin, TX getting honorable mention for Salt Lick BBQ and Amy's Ice Cream (Mmmmmmmm!).
I usually choose O'Hare for most of my journeys. O'Hare has lackluster corporate food, in fact one mass commissary supplies all the pan pizza, so whether you go to Uno's or Reggio's, etc., it's the same pie. Yes, there is a Wolfgang Puck's, but this joint is a corporate as it gets and has stopped preparing the smoked salmon pizza.
Recently I flew through Midway and was quite surprised to find that the dining options are mostly independent Chicago restaurants, representing REAL Chicago chow.
Here a list of what I found before my flight:
Lalo's Mexican - I had a chorizo and egg breakfast burrito (quite tasty).
King Wah - beyond standard offerings of beef broccoli, Ma Po Tofu, Crab rangoon, etc. they offer a "dim sum of the day" delicate crystal shrimp dumplings were the special last Tuesday.
Manny's Deli - Yup, that fatty pastrami we all know and love.
Pegasus - Very inventive Greek influenced sammy's, gyros, moussaka and a plethora (I counted 7) of beautiful looking Greek pastries, cookies and custards.
Gold Coast Dogs - 'nuff said!
Reilly's Daughter - Southside Irish tavern
Luigi Stefani's - Pannini, pasta and pizza
Potbelly - Chicago's contribution to corporate subs...
Lastly, there is a real bookstore, not only selling bestsellers and mysteries, but literary classics, up to date contemporary fiction and to my great delight...there were more left leaning political commentaries (Franken, Moore, Carville) than those of the right.
Proof again, we live in one "kick-ass" city!
