Dining in the Eastern Wastelands...

Richard Foss | Apr 16, 200112:50 PM

The enthusiastic recommendations I received for dining in the San Bernardino area ("Bring a lunch") spurred me to seek a bit further afield. I remembered a French restaurant in Upland which had been good five years ago and decided to see if the place was still decent.

I highly recommend Cafe Provencal on Foothill to any Chowhounds who are in the area and seeking sustenance. This is probably the only restaurant in the area that might actually do well on the West Side. The menu is a list of old favorites, nothing particularly innovative but all well executed. We started with French onion soup, duck pate, and frog legs, followed by main courses of Colorado elk and venison and Texas rack of lamb. The meats all were very nicely done and the demi-glace as good as I have had in some time. Dessert was a souffle of Grand Marnier, again as light as one could wish for. Price was reasonable - the three of us spent $140.00 for a lavish dinner and a bottle of decent French Burgundy. The restaurant is pretty and characterful but not at all stuffy. If you have any reason to go to the Ontario/San Bernardino area, it is well worth a visit.

P.S. - Thanks to the people who gave me suggestions for San Bernardino. I will investigate some of the places recommended and report on them here.
