We are compulsive dim sum eaters. We've loved Rol San for years, and we've been all over the city looking for comparable fare. But last Sunday (January 29th, 2012) we discovered Ha Gow Dim Sum House. They're waiting for their restaurant license, so at the moment they're mainly take-out and delivery. They do have a few tables - but only the legal amount for their license. The space is bright and warm and inviting - none of the cavernousness of Rol San or Bright Pearl. And the food is simply divine - it's the Cordon Bleu of Dim Sum (and I'm not prone to hyperbole). Where to begin? The food is elegant in it's deliciousness. Try the Steamed Spinach, Shrimp, and Garlic Dumplings - they are so fresh and nuanced in their flavour! We also loved their version of the Pan Fried Green Onion Pancake (a Dim Sum classic). Theirs somehow straddles the line between fried food and health food. The pancakes are crisp on the edges without being greasy. The green onion is plentiful and the overall flavour is fantastic. We had: Steamed Minced Beef Ball - fantastic with vinegar; the classic Steamed Shrimp Dumplings - generous and fresh-tasting; the steamed Eggplant with Garlic - delicious; and, of course, the Steamed BBQ Pork Bun - which was so generous in its filling, and better than any I've had in Toronto. In short, everything we tried elicited another cry of approval. It was a great meal and on top of everything else, the staff are super friendly and helpful. The chef even came to speak with us. I hope this place will see the success it deserves. It's at 988 Danforth, right next door to the Only (also a great place!).
