After finally visiting Lake Spring to try the famous pork pump (lucious, but you all know that already), we stopped for dessert at Dim Sum Express on Garfield, across from Garfield Medical Center. We had three of the traditional dim sum desserts: custard cups, sesame balls and pineapple cream bun, and they were fantastic. All were still warm (the sesame balls were piping hot). The sesame balls were crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside with a light yellow, mildly sweet bean paste. The custard cup pastry was flaky, the custard was good, but could have been creamier. We had two pineapple buns, one was overcooked, but the other was just perfect: light and fluffy cake with creamy pineapple custard. These are the same desserts you get an every dim sum palace but were better than most I've had (excepting the custard cups at Sea Harbor). Freshness could be the issue, as these seemed straight out of the oven/fryer, as opposed to sitting in a cart. Pastries lose a lot under the warmer. In any case, these were great, and I wonder if anyone has tried any of the savory dim sum offerings here and can tell us how they were.
