Differences between brushed and polished copper exterior

I don't understand this. Why do a brushed copper exterior (Falk) not oxidize and, like a polished one, quite fast develop a patina? How can many small "ups and downs" in the surface prevent, or delay, the oxidation process from heat and oxygen in the air? Someone here who knows more about this kind of chemistry than I do?
