I saw someone post Sarge's as a solution to a budget conscious eater in Murray Hill-Gramercy Park. I beg to differ. That would be a depressing/disappointing place to eat particularly when better options are relatively close at hand...even staying within the deli genre, one would be better served to bus, cab or walk to Second Av. Deli - on Second Av. (duh) nr 10th or 11th - has a counter, often has a line, sandwiches are great and mushroom barley soup is to die for (recipe available on epicurious, btw) - or Katz's on Houston and allen ? where the dollar tip to the counterman is well-worth it. we also like to pay extra for lean, but that's personal preference. if you can't choose between corned beef and pastrami, get a combo.Quick service/or table service - just get and do not lose that all important ticket when you enter. Both have good pickles in case that is a priority.
