I didn't expect to find really, really good Indian food in Fredericksburg. Diamond of India is as good as anyplace I've been to in Fairfax County and better than most. I had dinner there (Sunday night) and everything was delicious. We had mango lassis, the assorted platter of appetizers (pakoras, samosas, chicken tikka, and lamb kabobs), mattar paneer (the green peas and yogurt dish, with a surprising red sauce), basmati rice, paneer kulcha (wheat bread with yogurt cheese and fresh coriander baked in their tandoori oven), and salmon pattia. I have to say that this last was the best fish I have ever had in any Indian restaurant, and some of the best anywhere. I don't know what they used in their marinade or braising sauce, but combined with the charcoal grilling, this seared it perfectly. The salmon had a barely crunchy, spicy surface and was tender inside (a rarity with charcoal grilling). We were too full for dessert.
Their menu didn't have a website listed. The restaurant is easy to find; 2032 Plank Road (Rte. 3), just east of the I95 exit, south side of the street. Ummm, sorry, I don't remember the exit number, but Fredericksburg only has a couple of exits. They have a lunch buffet every day that I am going to check out next time I am down that way at the right time. I hope some of you try it too.
