I happened to be in Frisco yesterday and was surprised that this custard chain had established a location in the area. Based on their menu, it looks more similar to a Culver's: a hybrid between Steak and Shake and a typical custard stand like Ritter's, Connie's, or Shake's.

It was about 100 degrees yesterday with the sun beaming down, so it was a good day to put their custard to the test. I had a single in a dish, with half vanilla and half chocolate. No toppings.

Unlike Sheridan's (or really, most of the other custard shops in DFW), Freddy's custard doesn't have the consistency of soft-serve ice cream and held itself together as custard should. The custard wasn't getting mushy or melting rapidly. It's smooth, creamy, dense, rich, while at the same time, it doesn't taste oversweetened. Flipped the cup over, and nothing spilled out. Finally, frozen custard done right.

Sure, we have all these frozen yogurt shops setting up around town and I love the stuff just like anyone else. However, frozen yogurt will always melt quickly, while a good frozen custard should stand up against our hot summers. Majority of the places that sell custard in DFW are completely forgettable, the exception being Wild About Harry's. Even then, I've found their custard too soft so I just end up holding in the craving until I leave town.

While Freddy's isn't the best custard I've ever had, they have a product that is better than average, beating out the rest of the local competition. It's good that this option is now available in the area.
