Without a doubt, my favorite of the week -- so far, at least -- was the sauteed Spanish mackerel with braised fennel and mustard vinaigrette at The Tasting Room at Lola last night. The fish skin was crispy and salty, which contrasted beautifully with buttery texture and oilyness of the fish itself. The fennel had a highly concentrated anis flavor that was warmed up by the vinaigrette, and it rounded the fish flavors wonderfully. The paired wine, a Jean-Marie Guffens "Les Tourettes" Viognier-Rousanne 2000, provided a very nice counterpoint.
My second favorite: The jalapeno cheddar cheeseburger at Sam's Burger House in far north Dallas. Next time, I am going to ask them to cook it medium-rare.
