Is dessert optional?

DukeFan | Feb 27, 201504:26 AM     29

Wanted to get feedback on something I've been seeing lately at various dinner parties.

Is it mandatory to try desserts? Is it appropriate for a host to automatically serve dessert without asking.

I know there is alot of debate of this board about guest preferences. I fully agree with most that you should eat or at least try whats in front of you, unless there is a major dietary requirement or allergy issue.

There are so many people out there who are watching their diet or concerned about calories, I feel that it is putting some people in a difficult spot if high calorie food in just thrown in front of you. I agree when you accept a dinner party invite, you are agreeing to splurge a little, but it seems reasonable to be ability to refuse (politely) a high calorie treat. Likewise, I think it can be very inappropriate for a host to present a high calorie dessert without asking.
