desperate to get thick crema

i have a pavoni (the chrome peacock), i have a rancilio grinder, my beans are well blended and freshly roasted, i tamp the grinds in nice and tight and i usually get a startlingly good cup of coffee ... but the crema is thin. i've got used to this over the years, but on a recent trip to rome i realized just how flavourful crema is and it is indeed a big deal to not quite have it.

do i have to buy a professional restaurant-sized maker to get that thick crema? i mean i've tried nespresso and all, the crema looks great - but the coffee doesn't do much for me.
