My dad grew up in northern Jersey (Millburn), just across the street from the Suburban Bakery. This bakery made AMAZING coffee cake rings, called Grandmother's cake (without nuts) or Grandfather's (with nuts). It was a leavened coffee cake (almost bread-very airy) that stood about 5 inches high with the most amazing almond paste filling finished with a crumb topping. I have tried to recreate this cake more times than I can count- all failures. Does anyone have any recipes for anything similar I can try?? Or have any advice?? This has become a mission.
I have tried to research the family that owned the bakery, but it closed so many years ago, I've had no luck.
