Tucked behind Burger King on La Tijera is Derrick's Jamaican Cuisine. I'm always promising myself I'll stop in, and last night I finally did.
The chicken comes jerk, southern fried, curry & caribbean. Seafood includes red snapper, trout, catfish, shrimp, lobster tail & salmon. Specialties include oxtails and goat. There is an interesting selection of appetizers.
Several of their dinner items also came as sides, so I decided to sample. The oxtails were wonderfully rich in brown gravy and full of flavor. The jerk chicken was mildly spiced with a fruity flavor, moist, and seemed like a more refined jerk chicken than I am used to. Good, but different. The greens were terrifically fresh. They brought a basket of festival bread, finger-sized pieces, soft on the inside, crunchy on the out, with a slight taste of cinnamon. I tried not to eat it all. The cold hibiscus drink was strong, really good, and not on the menu. They also have a fresh juice & smoothy bar.
Entrees start at $12 for chicken and pork, seafood around $15, and some more expensive items go up to $20. Same food for lunch only cheaper. The place was about 1/4 full, and everyone was eating either the gumbo or soup (there's something on the menu called "fish tea".)
