Deluxe Foods Aptos Follow-Up

Nathan P. | Jan 15, 200501:59 AM

I made the jouney down 1 to see if Deluxe foods could live up to Tana's rave review and break my loyalty to Shoppers Corner. I thought it was a nice place but not good enough to lure this westsider that far away.

Produce was a toss up. They seemed to carry stuff from the same growers- of course at this time of year it is slim pickings anywhere.

Fats- another tie. Shoppers has a significantly better selection of Olive oil but Deluxe had some very cool butters and tubs of duck fat.

Meat the edge goes to Deluxe- they tend to have the same suppliers and while Deluxe can at best tie the service at shoppers but the giant slab of bone in dry aged Strip looked great and pushed them over the edge. (it did not actually looked aged but the marbling of the meat was significantly better than anything I have seen in SC.

Fish- they both are showcases of the state of fish eating and distribution in the area......

They both carried the other key things I buy, San Marzano Tom., pasta (deluxe had more rustichella), same brand of dried mushrooms,etc..

Booze- Shoppers for Wine, beer and there great selection of liquor. I did get a nice bottle of Alaskan Smoked Porter at Deluxe though.

The ice cream selection at Deluxe was impressive.

I'm sure if I lived near Deluxe I would love it but it was not good enough to beat shoppers. I will head back to try the beef when I am feeling luxourious (it was $25/lb) and pick up some Vermont cultured butter and duck fat. Thanks for the tip.
