Best deli? It's not where you think...

I am, of course, talking about Brent's in Northridge.
I'm sure there are a bunch of westsiders who'd be amazed at what they've been missing if they'd only make the drive into the Valley. But it's worth the effort for food that scored a 25 in Zagat along with typically excellent and sometimes brassy deli service.

Brent's has been a favorite ever since my girlfriend (now wife) took me there when we first started dating. It was only a couple of miles from her place and we'd go several times a week when I was staying at her place (we lived about 60 miles apart and had 2 bases of operation).

We had a chance to return for breakfast this week during a family trip into Southern California (we live in Salt Lake City now). Hardly anything has changed except the prices are up from the last visit about 3 years ago.

Portions are generous, the food is well-prepared...our omelettes were perfectly

We ordered lunch to go...for me a Brisket Ortega Melt, with brisket as tender as the best BBQ places discussed on the Texas board. The Mrs got her all time favorite (and one of mine too), the unbelievably good Black Pastrami Reuben.
Both sandwiches are sided with cole slaw and 2 kinds of pickles. We get potato salad instead of fries when we get to go. Brent's version is on the mild side, just spuds, mayo, mustard and a bit of relish and seasoning, but it is miles ahead of the yucky commercial variety you run into so often.

We also took to go portions of their chopped liver, smoked whitefish salad (with bagel chips for scooping) and rice pudding, each of which represents sheer excellence in the genre.

The menu is expansive, and only the potato skins are to be avoided. Everything else always pleases, along with super service from the waitstaff and busboys.

A visit to Brent's is in order any time any Chowhound is in Southern California and has wheels. They are in the strip mall in the northeast quadrant of the intersection of Parthenia and Corbin, about half a block in on Parthenia. The place is SRO on weekends, but midweek you can drop by late morning for breakfast or lunch and usually get seated right away.
