Del Merei Grille - review

MDoodle | Mar 30, 200806:54 AM

Kind of a long post here, sorry...

Went to Del Merei Grille for the first time on Friday night with the bf and an out of town guest. For being in a little strip mall, the place is cute, dining room relatively tiny. We ordered some drinks (glass of chard, Pellegrino) and asked the server questions about the sizes of the steaks – which, as it turns out, many of them are sort of small (4-5oz). Though, they do come with 2 sides in the price…I don’t know, some of the cuts just seemed slightly overpriced to me. The bf and I both got the surf and turf (5 oz Del Merei Grille filet, which I believe the server said was a sirloin; crab cake, 3 stalks of grilled asparagus, and mashed potatoes for $27), friend got the special of the night – Ribeye, which they ran out of just after he ordered, so he opted for the NY Strip. Oh, and we also got the Frickles for an app – so good!

I ordered my steak Medium, the other 2 Medium Well. Mine came out very close to Medium Rare in most spots, and the other 2 steaks were obviously Well Done. This seems to be a common occurrence though so I wasn’t really surprised. The favor of my steak was great. The crab cake was fishy tasting, and my bf found this random tomato in his (a whole cherry tomato) and we couldn’t figure out if it was supposed to be there or not. I told him to inquire about it but he didn't want to. Their asparagus and mashed potatoes were both really good, and our friend said he liked their baked beans. Table agreed that my steak was the best, if not slightly undercooked. Neither of the guys were overly impressed with their meal. I liked mine.

For dessert, we got the profiteroles and some kind of brownie thing. The profiteroles were huge – 2 of them came on the plate, and were bigger than my whole meal. They were very dry, i just ate the ice cream out of the centers. The brownie was pretty boring. BF got an Irish coffee.

Check came – was $121 without tip. I left a cash tip, which I always try to do if possible as all of my friends that are servers tell me they prefer cash tips. Makes sense. Yesterday I open my bank account to see I was charged $145. I called the restaurant numerous times and no one picked up (not open for lunch Saturday, but dinner starts at 5 and still no one was there at 3:45?). I had to leave the house so I left a voice mail explaining the issue and asking if someone would be able to return my call when it was convenient for them. Haven’t heard back so I’ve got to call again today and resolve.
