In Defense of Authentic Cafe...Sort Of...

Despite the fact this place has taken quite a bashing on this board in the last few weeks, dropped in for a visit last night with SO and friend. I've recco'd this place a couple of times in the last month, so if it truly has become completely sucky, I owe it to my fellow Hounds to suffer through it.

This is a modest neighborhood joint, with entrees all in the 12-20 dollar range. A catfish fillet for your humble reporter, in a jerk sauce (pretty spicy) with cukes and corn colonels. Seriously, not bad. A little boring towards the end, but just fine. SO has filet of yellowtail with some sort of mango sauce thing happening. Tasty enough. Friend has skirt steak with shoestring fries, which is devoured at lightning speed. The grub is nothing to jump up and down and holler about, but it's far from the inedible dreck described in aforementioned harsh posts.

Service was pleasant, if not slightly slipshod (another sangria, please....please?...PLEASE...). The bartender in the adjoining lounge, although the purveyor of a mean martini (served in the shaker), seems like he just finished smoking twenty joints.

3 mains + 3 sangrias + 1 beer + 1 double espresso = 80 smackers.

So, is the place really that bad in the eyes of my fellow Hounds? Am I losing my mind? Or, worse yet, my taste?
