According to one of the local Santa Monica rags, Dee's Diner (on Santa Monica between 3rd and 4th) will be closing up shop in a month or so, after 60+ years. Moving in will be the fourth local branch of Le Pain Quotidien.
Nobody will ever confuse Dee's with gourmet food, but I'm going to miss it ... it was one of the few places in the Promenade area with any real character (not to mention a motley assortment of characters). And their monster burger with egg, onions, mushrooms, and bell peppers will linger in my memory even longer than it's lingered in some other places. With Thai-American shutting down too, LA will be losing two Burgers of Mass Destruction this summer.
That said, I'll have to add that I do really like LPQ. But of their 3 LA locations to date, one is 2 blocks from my pad and another is 1 block from my church, and now I'll have one 3 blocks from my office. Betcha the next one will be a block from my gym, and I'll start hearing the "X-Files" theme music in my head (played languidly on an accordion, of course).
