Back Deck Cherry Tomatoes and Lettuce and Swiss Chard

MidwesternerTT | Jul 15, 201602:01 PM     9

I've mentioned over on Home Cooking how much fun I'm having with a first-ever back deck container garden here in Minnesota, and I'm posting here to encourage others to try it. I'm cooking for just 2 of us & we're not much for tossed salads so the small amount of lettuce & Swiss Chard we've gotten from 8 plants (of each) so far has been perfect, some planted beside the tomatoes, most planted in their own long planter. Now my Tumbling Tom Cherry Tomatoes are ripening, at a rate of 6 per day from 2 plants.

The tomato plants need to be watered daily but that's been the only "hard" part, especially since we've gotten frequent rains this summer (most unusual). My garden center recommended I try Tumbling Tom variety for this first attempt. These plants are small, disease resistant, don't need to be staked and are doing fine, one each in two 12-inch pots hanging from the deck railing so not reachable by ground critters. I'm a bit confused about the determinate designator, since that supposedly means all the tomatoes are ready within a span of 1-2 weeks. But the description at this site says to expect tomatoes "all summer long". I've got a good mix of red/green on the vines now so we'll see. By the time you buy starter plants, pots, soil and rail-holders / hanging basket you'll certainly not be saving any money the first year, but it's been fun for me to watch these grow. https://bonnieplants.com/product/tumb...

I used Miracle Gro organic potting soil (COSTCO big bag) and have not needed to add fertilizer nor treat for any plant bugs/diseases.
