Decent diner in Downtown Brooklyn?

I am seeking a refuge from the blinking Marquee of Juniors, Brooklyns most "famous" wooden nickel.

The New Apollo on Livingston is no great bargain at $3.50 for a chocolate shake, and the food is hot but pedestrian.
The Donut House on Jay is the greasiest spoon I've ever rubbed up against (though their muffins and donuts are decent), and Happy Days Diner on Montague is passable in a pinch, but I wouldn't want to frequent it.

By the way, if you are obliged to go to Juniors, because of a cheese-cake craving, or out-of-town visitors, whatever the case.. ask to be served by Solomon. Juniors service is gruff, innatentive, and unknowledgable. Solomon is hands down the best person to eat with.. he actually responds when you say thank you, and he saw that I was reading, and brought me another coffee with the change, supposing that I might want to sit a moment, after paying.
