sorry to be so long in replying. You said you needed a bagel shop. Join the crowd, we'd love a good one but so far I don't know of one you might consider 'good'.
If you need 'em bad you might have em flown in (:->
there's a decent bagel to be found in Charleston but only passable ones here.
Where are you moving here from? That may help get you oriented. Are you really sad about moving here? We live in Shandon - well on the verge (its a local joke) and will be glad to share whatever will make you more comfortable about the move. E-mail me direct for other info. Mollie Ivins visited here and said it reminded her of Austin back before it got 'discoverred to death' We all freaked and tried to convince people its a small, hot, nasty unappealing burg.
I've been to Athens and its a fine town. But Cola is where you'll be and we try hard to keep a low profile. Cola is both a college(s) town and a big army base. Relevance is the number of Asian and Latino folks who have moved here over the years and settled in. We have some terrific places but not big numbers of them (example: 3 Indian places, not 20)
The big question(s) regard whether you can re-orient to biscuits instead of bagels, appreciate grits (yellow please) and what, exactly, is your position on barbeque? I'm not arguing - I _never_ argue about Q - its just to personal and we have lots of choices.
Columbia is the crossroads of bbq: you can get any of the 3 major sauce denominations here and that is a very good thing. I'll be glad to provide recommendations based on your preferences. How do you stand on hash? cracklins? do you think sugar belongs anywhere near cornbread? Do you use White Lily, Adluh or Red Band?
I'll do my best to help. let me know
all good wishes, Karin
