Change of location, size, and pitmaster for this pivotal DC bbq spot. Formerly the best place to get bbq in DC, so high standards were set . As where the original was purely a carryout, this has a bar and some seating. Relocated two blocks away to the 200 block of Florida Ave, NE.
Pork ribs might still be the best around. I could say the same for the sauce which is super thick and hearty. I also tried the rib tips. Although they are promoted as being "more tender than the baby back" (which I didn't believe for a second) they come out dense and chewy. Good, spicy, crusty, but chewy. Like meat gum, but in a good way..
The pulled pork by the pound is advertised as "not carolina style." So I was expecting ther sandwich to be the same. Wrong! It is very salty and tangy and pretty bad. Same thing for the collard greens, just a terrible thing to do to greens. The beans are very good, sweet with firm texture, but they hand out skimpy side portions with their combos.
The big surprise here are the smoked-then-fried chicken wings. One of the top orders of wings in the city. A MUST order. I didn't get to the brisket this time, but I will be back.
