This is short, but yummy.
Took your advice from a posting last week. Only had two nights to chow in DC and needed your advice about the quintessential DC experience.
We were staying in Dupont Cirle at the Omni (nice hotel - got a GREAT rate on Priceline). The first night we went Lebanese Tavern near our hotel. Just 'okay' food, definitely not something I'd recommend.
After reading post after post about the Ethiopian food being a MUST in DC, we just had to give it a shot. There are not many Ethiopian spots in San Francisco and we were fascinated by the overwhelming recommendations on this board.
On the second night we ended up at Dukem. Let me preface this by saying that we have never eaten Ethiopian so have nothing to compare it to. We are fairly well-versed on many different ethnic cuisines, but I have to say, we really enjoyed Ethiopian! Aside from the fasctination with eating with our hands, the flavors and unique variety of dishes were just delightful! We got the combination platter served on a large silver dish with all of the food placed on top of Ethiopian bread. We had the lamb tidbits, a chicken stew and veggie sides - everything great.
Now I can't say how Dukem compares to other Ethiopian restaurants because I haven't had any others, but I can say that the place was PACKED and the 2 other Ethiopian places on the same block, were completely empty.
