DBGB - Overpriced & Underwhelmed

dynastar | Jan 17, 201112:42 PM

Sat we visited DBGB with another couple. I was really excited about going here, but will not go back. Everything on the menu, while good, you can get somewhere else better and much cheaper. We are not strangers to paying for a good meal, but felt like we were taken for a ride.

We started off with the sausages: Polonaise, Viennoise and the Vermont. The kielbasa was tasty, but no better than the Hillshire Farm you get from the supermarket. In fact, the Hillshire Farms has a little more crunch to it. The Viennoise tasted just like a diner sausage patty, albeit with better quality meat. The Vermont was the standout, especially with the cheddar in the middle and the hash brown thingy. Had we paid 1/3/ to 1/2 of what we did, I am sure that we would have been happy with what we received. But when plates arrived, we looked at each other and said; "that's it?"

For the entrees our friend had the Piggy burger, $19 for a 6oz burger? I have no problem paying that for a burger, but it better be good! It wasn't, or at least not $19 good. And 6oz?!?! Really? You can get a better burger at JG Mellon. My fiancee had the brisket pappardelle. It was good, but nothing special. And I had the schnitzel. It was tasty, but the Schnitzel Truck is much better, bigger and $8.

OOps I forgot about the desserts. I had the ice cream sandwhich. It was good, but the sorbet, while refreshing, overwhelmed the ice cream. Now I understand when watching Top Chef when they talk about editing your dish. The sundae was great, however.

At the end of the day we ate everything. Nothing was bad, and most things were good. If the prices had been lower, I am sure that we would have been happy with the meal. But at those prices/ portion sizes you would expect to have a "You gotta try this!" moment - at least once. The closest we got was a half-hearted "That's good."

The Good:

Decor was great. Really matched the product.
The service was perfect. We were not smothered like the complaints from a year ago.
The beer was fantastic, the scotch even better.
The bartender was very helpful and knowledgeable
I liked the menu and the offerings
Great beer menu
Ice cream sundae

The Bad:

Overpriced for what you get (food and drinks) Either increase portion size or lower the prices
Food is good, but not great (again a cost/value issue)
