Dayton, Ohio, Ice Pops

I have been dying to get to Nashville ever since I heard about Las Paletas, an ice pop shop with all kinds of luscious-sounding flavors. So, I was thrilled to discover that an ice pop shop has now opened just a few blocks from where I work. Sweet P's is a tiny operation in Kettering's Castle Hills shopping center on Stroop at Far Hills, right next to Young Chow. Owner Pam Bertke has a rotating selection of flavors, all listed on a chalkboard behind the freezer holding the treats. I have only been twice so far, but plan to go at least once or twice a week. The first ice pop I had there was a Good Morning Grapefruit one and it was one of the best things I have ever eaten. The sweet/tart balance was perfect and the texture was just right, too. For my next visit, I opted for the sugar-free Pineapple-Mango with piquin chile pepper dusted on the outside, which was also delicious. Sweet P's offers several different dairy-based and several other water-based ice pop flavors each day, as well as at least one selection that has no added sugar. Next on my list to try are the Mexican Chocolate, a dairy-based pop starring dark chocolate, cinnamon and chile pepper, and Cucumber with Chiles. I am looking forward to seeing more pops with herbal elements, such as basil & rosemary, which Ms. Bertke told me she is planning to add. Each ice pop is $2.50 and the business is strictly cash-only, so stop by the ATM before you go, but definitely go! Sweet P’s is open Wednesday through Saturday noon - 8 p.m., and Sunday 1- 5 p.m. I wish they were open today!
