Day-trip Report

sixteenbiticon | Apr 18, 2011 08:16 AM

Ah, what a day. I'll be posting about the trip at length on my blog, but I'll give you a quick recap.

Breakfast was chocolate chip walnut cookie at Levain. Wasn't as good as we'd remembered, can no longer say it's my favorite cookie. I need some chew in my cookie! Although it proved to be a great drunken dessert on the subway later that night.

Afterwards we meandered over to Central Park since a member of our group had never seen it before. Walked down to Columbus Circle and hopping the train down to the West Village.

Brunch at the Spotted Pig. Sat upstairs, slow service which I expected. The burger wasn't as good as last time, and I can no longer say that is my favorite burger. The bun was too buttery which made the sandwich as a whole very heavy, plus the salt level was through the roof. It was much more balanced last time. The girls loved the fries, and gobbled most of them off of my plate. One of the best Bloody Marys I've had in recent memory, and Six Point Chocolate Rye Porter is a damn fine beer.

More meandering down Bleecker. Women wanted to shop. Met up with another friend and went in Blind Tiger. Bartenders were super nice and the place was full and hopping. Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball was another fantastic brew. Tampenade was nice and briny, loved the buttered bread.

Women wanted Bubble Tea so we hoofed it down to Chinatown, shopping along the way. Bought a new pair of shoes at Steve Madden in SoHo. Got bubble tea at Teariffic and it was the first chance I had to try sesame and I loved the added texture of the ground up seeds, although its clearly not for everyone. Split a plate of liang pi and spicy cumin lamb noodles at Xi'an. Liang pi was as good as we had in Flushing, but I really enjoyed the cumin lamb noodles. A new favorite dish for sure.

Hopped the train out to Brooklyn, were able to get into barcade with an underaged member of our party. Was floored by how much I liked Smuttynose Barleywine, as I've never tasted one I liked. My tastes must be changing. Wasn't impressed by Brooklyn Main Engine Start.

And finally we headed up to Greenpoint just in time to grab another quick beer at Brouwerij Lane (I love this place) before the doors at Paulie Gees opened. By this time the alcohol blurred some of the finer details of our evening but we ordered the In Ricotta Da Vita, Baconmarmalade Picante, Regina, and Greenpointer. Personal favorites were the IRDV and the Bacon Picante. Baconmarmalade Sundae was interesting, required a lot of ice cream to off set the startling salty/spicy punch of the baconmarmalade.

Rushed to make our bus, only arriving to find it was running 40 mins late, of which we had to spend standing in the rain. It didn't damper our spirits though, and all in all it was a great day.
