Met up with friends at the Davio's bar for eats last night. Pretty space, but the bar is not good for conversing with a group bigger than two. So the four of us weren't able to talk much, particularly when food arrived.
Started with the mango royale -- some fancy name, I forget what it was... but it was a nice drink, made with the house spumante and mango puree. The bartender poured drinks that were too stiff for one of my friends -- she had to send back her sapphire martini concoction -- served with a splash of blueberry grappa -- cos it was so overpowering. He was lovely about it.
For apps, friends had the minestrone and the pureed bean soup. Didn't try either, but they ate it all! We had prosciutto with arugula and green olives. Nice, but way too much oil on everything, which smothered the flavors of the meat and the greens. It was best when put over a piece of a raisin bread they served in the bread basket.
Then friends had the pizza with prosciutto, gorgonzola and fig. Really really good. Thin crust (i like it that way!) plenty of prosciutto, and generous with the other flavorings. Each bite was yummy. I really liked this one.
Someone else had a spaghetti arrabiata, which was quite fine, if a bit boring -- but the sauce was very tomato-y, with chunks of tomato and garlic to be eaten. Pasta slightly al dente.
Other friend had pasta with shrimp, over which she raved ... again, lovely tomato chunks in the sauce and garlic slices ... well prepared.
I had three contorni, mushrooms with onions, rabe with garlic, and gnocchi marinara. Still searching for the gnocchi of my dreams. This was too heavy for me. Have to try Sage, I know! The mushrooms were good, earthy; I wanted more onions, but I am an addict. The rabe passed muster as well.
Then we had a plate of assorted cookies. A great eclair, not so hot biscotti, great amaretti biscuits.
So. Did it blow my socks off? No. But as you can tell from our choices, we didn't go out on any limbs either. Will I go back? Sure. Especially for that pizza. And it's a nice space (can get extremely loud, the ceilings are very very high! not "cozy" either).
I liked it. But I think I will try Sage's gnocchi next.
