"Best by" dates are bewildering...

annastasia | Feb 29, 2012 03:52 PM

I just found a tetra pak of Campbell's chicken broth (low sodium) in my pantry with BB date of Nov 23, 2011. The advice on its usability ranges from throw away now (Campbell's helpline) to good for upto 4 months -online food safety chart. Information circulating in the blogosphere would have one believe that not all expry dates need to be adhered to especially if its not a fresh food item. Any opinions on whether my broth is still safe to use? And suggestions for a rule of thumb for when to ignore expiry dates on sealed, packaged and processed foods?
