I'm getting married in a couple of weeks, and wedding planning has been a little tough on both me and my bride-to-be. I'd like to take her on a pre-wedding date, our last date as singles.
Since the theme is singles, I was thinking some kind of 50's type place where we could get drinks. Cocktails. But I'm sure we'll want to eat something, and I don't want to go some place with bad food. I'm considering the bar at the Rainbow Room, but I've never heard anybody anywhere say anything about the Rainbow Room, which makes me suspect it's a tourist trap. Bar at the Modern is a possibility. I like Art Deco. Where else?
Mandarin Oriental? What is the atmosphere like during the week? (this will be post-Gates).
Some things I've thought about and rejected...
Bemelman's Bar - I don't know if I'm spelling it right. The last time I tried to go there it was overflowing with 80 year olds, which would be fine with me normally but not what I'm going for on my last date as a single.
Brooklyn -- we live pretty far uptown, and Brooklyn can make for a very late night. We're still single, but not, alas, still young.
Anything in the Time Warner Center -- I'm sure other Chowhounds are right about the great food at the various restaurants, but I simply can't get over the fact that it is a shopping mall.
Thanks in advance...
