We've been enjoying takeout food from both of these restaurants during Covid, so much so that I wanted to write about it! Daol is in the spot where Casserole House used to be, on the southern end of Telegraph. Takeout has been consistently good, but we are especially loving their bo ssam. The dish costs about $30, but it's plenty to feed two people -- lots of tender pork belly, with a variety of condiments: a super oyster-ey radish sidedish, fresh garlic, bean paste, chilies, fried mini anchovies, sliced cabbage and then the typical panchan of the day (usually about 5 items). It's really excellent, and if you're a lover of pungent seafood things, this is worth a try just for the condiments.
Meanwhile, we've been to both branches of Pyongchang. The one in Berkeley has fried chicken on the menu, which we liked. They also sell containers of their kimchee and other panchan, which I think is the best around. The Oakland branch of Pyongchang doesn't have any fried chicken that I know of, but it's still great. Good tofu soups, good seafood and kimchee pancakes.
Anyway, hope this encourages folks to support their local Korean restaurants!
