Danube Service Leaves Bad Taste in Mouth

jkl | Nov 25, 2007 07:43 PM

After hearing some good things about a little hole in the wall cafe that serves crepes in Kensington, I decided to treat my friend to a birthday lunch at Danube (she loves crepes so it was supposed to be a nice treat). I was more than a little bit dissappointed in the poor service we were provided, and the lack of manners the servers/owners provided to us. I have eaten out at many places, and even comparing to fast food service, this has to be the WORSE experience I have ever encountered at ANY restaurant.

What started out as a planned visit (I had tried called for reservations to find out that they don't reserve for any tables under 4 people?!?) my friend and I decided to still go to Danube to wait for a spot. There were at least 4 empty tables with Reserved signs... I guess they were for the parties of 4 or more... I had gotten there first, so I asked for a seat for 2. It should have been a sign to leave when I overheard a server (whom I assume is the owner) behind the register speaking badly of the group of girls that had just left a 25 cent tip for her. Lucky for me, it was another girl that sat me at my table with my menus. I informed my server of our order - one savoury crepe with NO Feta cheese (allergy reason), and one sweet crepe.

As my friend pulls up her chair 10 mins later, I still have yet to see my drinks. I wasn't expecting 5-star service... just my food and drinks. When the orders were dropped off by the owner that I spoke of above, I notice immediately that there were discrepencies. I felt her pressuring attitude and harrassing response lead me to feel intimidated enough to keep what she placed in front of me... however, I insisted that the corrections be made so that my friend would be able have a better experience on her birthday. On the second try, still without drinks, she dropped off one crepe visually similar to the previous wrong crepe, and there's still Feta cheese on the first bite. The owner proceeded by leaving the crepe at the table with no apologies. My friend and I decided that we would not wait for the second crepe or our drinks, and just pay our bill to leave. Perhaps it was an off day, but there was no reason for the actions that followed. The owner continued to argue with me when I asked for my bill, and as I pointed out to her that her attitude was not helping the situation, she started to threaten me that I hadn't seen attitude yet. She looked like she would jump over the counter and ready to hit me...

Let's just say that I will wait until Vancouver for my crepes...
