Dan's Soul Food & Bakery, Wrightwood

Across 79th St from St. Rita's High School, my youngest son and I dined at Dan's Soul Food & Bakery, which has a comfortable dining room, but counter service only (pay, take your number and wait). The employees were plenty friendly and there seemed to be quite a few repeat customers dining there.

The cases display some mighty proud looking layer cakes (on display today, they had coconut, german chocolate, lemon and pound cakes -- all slices $2, whole cakes range from $13.99 for a pound cake to $25.50 for an atomic cake). Other desserts include peach and apple cobbler, sweet potato pies, and banana pudding. The dinners include the standard array of meats and sides.

I had the vegetable lunch (three sides and a corn muffin). The sage-cornmeal dressing was good, the mac-&-cheese fair, and the collard greens succulent. My son's lemon cake was moist, dense, tangy and iridescent, as it ought to be. They threw in a stray piece of caramel cake for the road, one buck (because it was small).

A worthy addition to one of Chicago's chowiest avenues.
