Dallas Dining Report

Jim Zurer | Apr 1, 199902:43 PM
Texas Dallas-Fort Worth

Two very good meals in Dallas--actually both in Oak
Cliff....one at Gloria's, a very pleasant Salvadoran
restaurant--the first of a mini-chain of three; even
the salsa and bean dip were great. Pupusas and
tamales were very good, shrimp in garlic were miles
ahead of average shrimp dishes, and the grilled
marinated quail--three meaty specimens per order--were
out of sight. Only the catfish fillets disappointed.

The second was at an old Dallas standby--La Calle Doce
on 12th Street (surprise). The oysters were cheap,
but not outstanding..being from the Gulf ($6 a dozen),
the ceviche was tangy, spicy, and altogether a great
treat. Margaritas are a house specialty. Main
courses of fried whole tilapia and grilled catfish
were excellent, marred only by slight overcooking.
Everyone at the large table enjoyed their food,
extolling even the fajitas.

A very pleasant flan closed out an excellent and very
reasonable meal...Service couldn't have been nicer--
they didn't even complain about separate checks for
the party of ten.
