Question: Duo, Ruelo, JW and Daan-Go. What is the common denominator?!
Answer: They are all Richmond Hill patisseries, within 5 minutes drive of each other and all owned by pastry chefs who are of SE Asian/Oriental heritage, making western pastries with French techniques!
Daan-Go, opened by a former Masterchef Canada winner - Christopher Siu, his reputation alone was enough to attract a huge loyal following?! That's why, when I arrived at the store 2 minutes before opening, a line had already formed outside!....I was 6th in line!
Recommended enthusiastically by my wife's friend and using some superlative adjectives to describe some of their 'character face, Hello Kitty-esque' Macaroon, funky colored cake products and specifically the Tiramisu. It's only natural that, with my sweet tooth and curiosity, I have to give this place a try and see for myself, what the hype is all about!
Sorry to report, but IMHO, their products are way underwhelming and over-rated! Furthermore, based on their 'Hong Kong Chinesey style', rough-with-an-edge construction, appearance and mediocre taste, at the price point they are charging...way overpriced as well!
It is also the first time I really dislike the unnatural way a chef tried to infuse irrelevant hard, crunchy tit-bits to cakes in order to create some sort of textural interplay. Stand out failure were those tiny pearl cracklings placed in and on the Tiramisu rendering the cake unpleasant to eat. Why would someone want to screw up a perfectly normal, age-tested and enjoyable light and creamy sponge cake with noisy 'palate land-mines'?
At the same price point, DUO and even the slightly over-rated RUELO next door both offer tastier, more refined and sophisticated products!
Unless one is seeking for 'cute' looking macaroons with Hello-Kitty or care-bear faces....., I would suggest looking elsewhere for better tasting and well made French patisserie products!!
