"Da Brothers Done Good" at Jack's

Chuck | May 23, 200208:23 PM

Just got back from South Florida and ate at Jacks - 500 East Oakland Boulevard - Ft. Lauderdale 1/2 mile off 1-95 on south side and also had a chance to try Dontee's in West Palm, too.

Still have never had authentic Carolina "Q" so I just wanted to let all you Hounds know that. Anyway, I thought Jack's was real good. I liked it much better than The Ga Pig in Brunswick, Ga. even though theirs is authentic pit "Q"

I had Jack's chopped pork platter ($8.95) which allows one to choose their sides - all looked terrific. The sandwich deal comes only with excellent baked beans and non descript fries - spend the extra $ and get the platter - much more meat, too.

They are using a smoker not a pit - its like one you'd see at a gas station in a questionable area of town - sort of like a oil drum? The place is clean and the service is extremely friendly and respectful. These people want to please.

The "Q" was moist and had those wonderful crispy outer ends mixed in. Their sauce was nothing special, but the corn bread and the macaroni and cheese were excellent. The yams and their cobblers also looked very good. There is an interesting vinegar condiment - try it if you like Eastern Carolina type "Q".

I say "Go There" and let us all know what you think.

As fas as Dontee's in WPB is concerned, which was Flavor Dude's recommendation, I say thanks again. I went twice - The first breakfast was great and reminded me of my homeland's best diners in NJ. Just like Flavor Dude suggested it would.

However, the second breakfast, on my trip back up to Central Florida was spoiled by some terrible counter service. I guess when you've worked at a place for a long time, the smallest things upset you. Like having to cover a counter area when somebody goes on break?

I am continually amazed at how petty waitreses can be -especially when the boss is not on the premises. To have to wait 20 minutes for a stack at the counter and then wait another 5 minutes for somebody to get to the register is inexcusable. Incidently, the pancakes were good - light and very tasty.
