Hello everyone, I am new here, but I was searching for a good home-cooking discussion page and found this one. I wanted to know what are some of your thoughts on this cool new hand-held gadget that I found. Would anyone else buy this gadget that makes crinkle cutting simple?
Would it be worth me purchasing?
Whether buying this would be "worth it" would be entirely up to you. I'm normally not fond of single-use items for the kitchen, but if I thought I was going to be doing a lot of crinkle fries, crinkle carrots, crinkle pickles, etc., then I might get one.
I suppose if you could find one in a thrift store for a buck it might be worth giving one a try, but no more than that. I don't really have anything against unitaksers -- often they do their one thing better than the so-called multi-taskers that don't really do anything well.
But in this case there are likely cheaper and safer options available.
I have one, don't use it any longer, and wouldn't buy one again. Then again, my mandolin/v-slicer has a crinkle-cut blade, so I have a better option when I want to cut cucumbers for pickles.
The cutting action of a crinkle cutter is kind of awkward - it's a straight up and down chop, and it's not very ergonomically friendly, and it'll take a toll on your wrist. There's no way to sharpen the blade when it starts to dull, so over time, it'll take more and more effort to push through your potatoes/cucumbers/carrots/whatevers. Eventually, it'll just end up mashing the hell out of them.
If you can find one for a buck or two, give it a try. You might like it. You probably won't, though.
New? I have my grandmother's - and she probably got it 2nd hand in a thrift-store. They're sold all over, including over the interwebs. A quick scan even shows a curved/rocking style like a mezzaluna.
Take a chance.
Got my mom's. Used it maybe 3 times in 20 years. Maybe you'll use it more. Give 'er a whirl!
