Cutting Board Maintenance/Restoration HELP!

So I scored this nice THICK maple cutting board 20x15x2.5 at the thrift its not end grain but nicely made with dowels and handles and in pretty great shape. I'm excited about it. It does have some knife marks though and I would like to clean it up and get it tip top before it takes its place on my counter.

Normally I maintain my cutting boards with Boos oil or mineral oil. It seems that his board was previously finished with Beeswax.

Can I sand it down and finish with oil or will the wax be penetrated too deeply and repel the oil?

Second should I do this or is wax preferable for such a board?
