Appropriate cutting board for Japanese knife?

I just purchased my first Japanese knife (a Masamoto VG gyuto) after years of using Wusthofs. I generally use a bamboo cutting board when using the knife, but for smaller jobs I sometimes use a cheap plastic one. Can this do any damage to the blade? For that matter, are there any issues with bamboo cutting boards in terms of maintaining the sharpness of the blade? Thanks in advance for any advice.
