CURRY-DIVING: Invitation to Chowdowns on 11/4, 11/6, 11/19 & 11/23

Melanie Wong | Nov 3, 200301:29 PM

The blossoming of several new Indian and Pakistani restaurants has inspired a series of chowdowns to vet the newcomers and revisit the pioneers. Please join us for a curry-diving adventure!

Tuesday, Nov. 4, Noon – Lunch at SULTAN (339 Taylor St., SF)
http://chowhound.com/california/board...
Sultan is the newest light on the City’s Muglai horizon. We’ll arrange for some special dishes (e.g., coconut milk fish curry, charga spicy fried chicken, haleem) to put the new kitchen through its paces. The cost should be less than $15 per person. Email Melanie Wong, mswine@onebox.com, to reserve a seat.

Thursday, Nov. 6, 8pm – Dinner at SHALIMAR (532 Jones St., SF, 415-928-0333)
[BROKEN LINK REMOVED]
Shalimar introduced Punjabi dhaba-style cooking to San Francisco. This is your opportunity to find out why Malik, Shalimar’s greatest advocate, feels it’s still the best in town. RSVP by email to Malik, mkalfane@yahoo.com.

Wednesday, Nov. 19, 7:30pm – Vouvray and Dinner at DARBAR (1412 Polk St., SF, 415-359-1236)
[BROKEN LINK REMOVED]
François Rabelais described Vouvray as “wines of taffeta”, for their silky textures and radiant flavors. Produced from the Chenin Blanc grape grown in the Touraine area of the Loire Valley, Vouvray wines are best at the table as an accompaniment to richly flavored and creamy sauces.

Shreesh Taskar and Melanie Wong have chosen some special Vouvray wines, ranging from bone-dry to semi-sweet and all the way up the sugar scale to dessert, plus sparkling wines, to show the many personalities of Vouvray. This is the chance to try them as an interesting and nontraditional match with a multi-course Pakistani set menu. The menu and wine list with estimated cost will be available soon. Email Shreesh Taskar, shreesh@yahoo.com, for final details and to make a reservation.

Sunday, November 23, 1:00pm – Lunch at WOODLANDS Restaurant (39203 Cedar Blvd, Newark, 510-494-9727)
[BROKEN LINK REMOVED]
Woodlands offers the highly spiced and vivid vegetarian cuisine of South India. In addition to lunch, an afternoon of visits to the Indian/Afghani bazaars in the Fremont/Newark is in the works. Email your hostess, Alexandra Singer, alixsinger@yahoo.com, to reserve your space.

There are several more venues – Pakwan, Naan ‘n’ Curry, Alhamra, Udupi Palace, Lahore Karahi, Chutney, Chaat Café, Kabana, Little Deli, etc. – that we’re interested in adding to the chowdown series. If you’d like to volunteer to organize one of these outings, please contact Melanie Wong, mswine@onebox.com, to schedule a slot on the curry-diving calendar.

This is a private, volunteer assisted event. No agency relationship, express or implied exists between any parties and Chowhound, Inc. This is not a Chowhound, Inc. sponsored event.
