CURRY-DIVING: Invitation to Chowdowns on 11/17, 11/19, 11/21 & 11/23

Melanie Wong for The Masala Hounds | Nov 12, 200304:04 AM

The curry-diving adventure continues. Here’s an update with new chances to participate.

Monday, Nov. 17, 8:00pm – Belgian Beer and Dinner at PAKWAN (3182 16th St., SF, 415-255-2440)

Pakwan rivals Shalimar for the hearts and minds of dhaba-fans with its wider range of home-style Punjabi dishes. We’ll put the kitchen through its paces to see how it compares. Please BYOBB (bring your own Belgian beer) to share. Estimated cost: $15-20 per person, plus $8-14 for beer. PlumpJack in Noe Valley and BevMo are recommended for Belgian beer shopping. Please reply to Victoria Libin,, to reserve.

Wednesday, Nov. 19, 7:30pm – Vouvray and Dinner at DARBAR (1412 Polk St., SF, 415-359-1236)
François Rabelais described Vouvray as “wines of taffeta”, for their silky textures and radiant flavors. Produced from the Chenin Blanc grape grown in the Touraine area of the Loire Valley, Vouvray wines are best at the table as an accompaniment to richly flavored and creamy sauces.

Shreesh Taskar and Melanie Wong have chosen some special Vouvray wines, ranging from bone-dry to semi-sweet and all the way up the sugar scale to dessert, plus sparkling wine, to show the many and varied personalities of Vouvray. The wine list:

NV Champalou Petillant Brut, $15
2001 Marc Brédif, $10
2002 Champalou, $13
2002 Domaine Pichot, Dom. Le Peu de la Mariette, $9

1997 Domaine de la Fontainerie, Coteau la Fontainerie, $26
2000 Champalou, Le Clos de Portail, $23
2002 Champalou, Cuvée Fondreaux, $15

1989 Champalou, Cuvée Catherine, $72
1989 Huet, Le Mont, Premier Trie, $60
1995 Bourillon-Dorleans, La Coulée d'Or-Tris de Nobles Grains Moelleux, $33
2001 Champalou, Cuvée Moelleuse, $20

This is the chance to try them as an interesting and nontraditional match with a multi-course Pakistani set menu. The estimated cost for the evening, including a contribution to Chowhound, will be $55-60. Email Shreesh Taskar,, for final details and to make a reservation.

Friday, Nov. 21 – Lunch in the Tandoorloin. Please pencil in the date – more details soon.

Sunday, Nov. 23, 1:00pm – Lunch at WOODLANDS Restaurant (39203 Cedar Blvd, Newark, 510-494-9727)
Woodlands offers the highly spiced and vivid vegetarian cuisine of South India. In addition to lunch, an afternoon of visits to the Indian/Afghani bazaars in the Fremont/Newark is in the works. Email your hostess, Alexandra Singer,, to reserve your space.

There are several more venues – Naan ‘n’ Curry, Alhamra, Udupi Palace, Lahore Karahi, Chutney, Chaat Café, Kabana, Saravana Bhavan, Bar B Q Tonite, etc. – that we’re interested in adding to the chowdown series. If you’d like to volunteer to organize an outing to one of these restaurants or another favorite, please contact Melanie Wong,, to schedule a slot on the curry-diving calendar.
