Curl-your-toes Braised Red Cabbage

My Jewish German grandmother used to make braised red cabbage that had an amazingly strong sweet-and-sour flavour. I've tried lots of different recipes and nothing comes close. I don't recall any meat (definitely no ham or bacon) in the dish, though I do recall that the cabbage had a bright red colour.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
