My girlfriend really likes cupcakes and we were visiting NYC from Boston this weekend. On Saturday we spent a day with a friend who lives in the city. After a visit to the new MoMA, the friend suggested we go to Billy's in Chelsea for good cupcakes and other treats. We walked over to 9th Av and took a bus toward Chelsea. Halfway there, near the Lincoln Tunnel, we got stuck in serious traffic, RIGHT in front of a place called Cupcake Cafe. We decided to ditch the bus and took it as a sign that we should give this place a try. We went in, the place was quite full and the cupcakes in there LOOKED really nice. They were decorated with pretty frosting flowers. We each bought one, and they were very dense, almost like muffins. The frosting was butter cream. I was quite disappointed by these cupcakes though. They were small, TOO dense, kind of dry and cost 2 dollars each!
Not feeling satisfied, we decided to walk the extra 17 blocks to Billy's. We got cupcakes there too, which were bigger, fresher, and only 1.25 each! Frosting was also rich butter cream, plus Billy's had lots of other beautiful cakes and pies. I rarely make it down to that area when visiting NY, but if I ever go again, I'll be back at Billy's to try the pies. My real opinion is that cupcakes are better homemade. I will bake some for my girlfriend so that we can dedicate our time to seeking out other chowlicious items :)
