has anybody else tried this place?
i work in culver city - near robertson and venice - and often eat at the santa maria barbeque on culver blvd in the shadow of the sony bldg. i've read some downer reports on santa maria bbq in general on chow, but never heard anything about this particular place. it's absolutely amazing... dry rub bbq with just the right bit of tang. sauce is totally optional. (i've lived in memphis, detroit and chicago, and search out ribs everywhere i go)
get the babyback pork ribs ($9 - the only ribs they offer) the whole chicken ($10 also comes 1/4 or 1/2) rivals pollo ala brasa in terms of flavor volume. i'm not a huge fan of tri-tip, but in the face of those ribs, how can anyone think of anything else? oh, and the garlic bread is sublime, especially dunked in the bbq sauce they put on the side. good fresh salsa - picante! (stay away from the bbq pork - it always seems to be dry)
everybody i've taken there goes back within the week
i keep waiting for mister gold to discover this place... it's already packed every day at lunch. we had them cater our office opening party (outside in a construction site pit) and they did a super job. great show!
my only complaint is that they're closed too early for me to take anything home! (4pm, except fridays and saturdays, 8pm).
