Awhile back I read this SF Weekly post about the plantain burrito at Cuco's in the Lower Haight, and the potentially imminent demise of the restaurant:
Ever since, I've been meaning to try that burrito, and today I did.
First of all, make sure you order the plantain burrito, not just the super veggie, as the above article led me to believe. They're not one and the same.
Second of all, go for spicy rather than mild. I got the mild version, and I think spicy would've offset the sweet plantains much better.
As for whether this is the best burrito in the city, I wouldn't go that far. (My no. 1 burrito is still at El Castillito on Church across from the Safeway, not far from Cuco's.) But I did enjoy this burrito very much, and would go back to try it again in different permutations (today was pinto beans, no lettuce; next time I think I'd try black beans with lettuce). So when next you find yourself in the Lower Haight, check out Cuco's--the burrito's tasty, and sadly, you never know when this longtime LH fixture might be gone.
