Croutons from Speer's Market, Forestville

Melanie Wong | Jul 27, 2001 09:10 PM

Speer's (7891 Mirabel Rd., 707.877.2024) is a small local grocery store in rural Russian River Valley. In business for more than 70 years, it features a deli and in-store bakery. The selection of artisanal foodstuffs is far more than you'd expect from such a small establishment in the boonies.

The house-made croutons are super garlicky, made from top quality bread, and have an oily richness. We always fight over them in the kitchen and at the table. So be sure to buy twice the amount.

Probably not worth a special trip, but do stop here for picnic supplies when you're on this stretch of River Road in West Sonoma County.
