The Crossing [StL] -- o.k., not great

wayno | Jul 8, 200210:18 AM

After reading the posts below in response to the inquiry about where to go in StL to spend $100.00, not including wine, I decided to check out the Crossing [I had suggested Harvest]. It was certainly better than mediocre, but less than great. May be unfair to judge on only one visit, but I'd go back to Harvest or Eau before The Crossing. The main dishes tended to be overwhelmed by their sauces, the fish was overcooked, and tough, the descriptions were not consistent enough with what we received, and the service was too amateurish, yet a little "attitudinal" [i.e., pretentious], which is a bad combination. Our waitperson was operating under the delusion that she works in a big league restaurant. But, on the other hand, several dishes were very good, e.g., the appetizer of homemade straci with a bolognese ragu and the molded beet/goat cheese salad, as well as the panna cotta and chocolate cake.
