crossing Canada hungry

We're a family of 3 picking up an inherited car in Toronto and returning to Victoria three days from now. There's so much posted in Toronto I have lots of tips. But driving cross country I'm deathly afraid of settling for bad fast food when our 8 year old gets hungry and we're out there on the highway uninformed. She's happy to eat all kinds of interesting food if we can find it in time. Can anyone help with some tips on places they've stopped following Highway 1. After Lethbridge or Medicine Hat, I think we're taking a more southerly route (Hwy. 3) and going through the Crowsnest Past, with a stop at Ainsworth Hotsprings near Nelson for a warm-up, rest break. Easy-find, cheap motels that were welcome stops for others would be appreciated as well. Many many thanks for any quick tips. P.S. cheap eats, not fine dining pls. We'll be travelling in comfy sweats and snow boots.
Thanx again.
