I was able to finally make it to Crispo for dinner last Saturday. I had wanted to go for the past couple years but never quite made it. I only wish I had gone sooner because it was a terrific experience. A few observations:
Ambience/Service- I loved the exposed brick interior and casual feel. It was a very cozy and had the "neighborhood atmosphere" which I enjoy. The service was very good and there was always someone at our table, including the Manager, offering to answer questions, make recommendations, etc. The place can get loud but we were able to enjoy our conversation.
Appetizers- We ordered the Rissoto Balls, good but not superb. I would prefer them a little lighter. At the recommendation of a chowhounder, my wife ordered the octopus as an appetizer. She was expecting a salad but received a generous serving of braised octopus with potato. It was a meal by itself. Finally, I love cheese and the Manager recommended the Pecorino Pepato. It was a nice blend of different flavors and textures. A nice surprise. There are so many appetizers that looked great that it was tough to choose so I am looking forward to many return trips.Beware though, the portions are large.
Main Course-This was tough so I decided to go with the classic Spaghetti Carbonara. It is not a dish I normally order but I am glad I did. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the flavor of the smoked prosciutto was amazing. It may have been the best dish I have had in a long time. Just amazing. My wife ordered the Orecchiette with broccoli rape and sausage. The meal itself was also very good but the sausage was outstanding! Very lean with a lot of flavor. I don't know if they make the sausage themselves but it was the best I have had in a long time. Fortunately, the meals were very large so we had leftovers to enjoy.
Dessert-We were bloated but had to order their Zeppole. Very light and tasty.
The price for all of this including a few cocktails and soft drinks was $120.00 before tip, a great value. I loved this place and hope to be able to come back often. Thank you to all the Chowhounds that recommended the place!
