Cream Puff Filling - Not instant pudding

mickeygee | Nov 24, 201012:32 PM     6

My cousin, who normally brings cream puffs every Thanksgiving, just had a baby, so no cream puffs. I volunteered to make them and she sent her recipe, but the filling is instant vanilla pudding with milk and cool whip. I figured I'd make the filling from scratch and it would be great.

However, now at the 11th hour I'm starting to have doubts. See, my family is VERY set in their ways about how things taste, and I don't want to go too off the mark with a filling. So I'm looking for a simple vanilla custard that won't have people thinking, "this taste's nothing like Kris's cream puffs".

As I'm not a huge baker, I don't have any good basic vanilla puddingish pastry cream recipes, but would love one! Suggestions? Thanks!
