Help with cream cheese frostings...

Maybe someone can help me out...
I made a great lemon layer cake that had a cream cheese frosting to go with. On the site where I got it from, some comments from other folks mentioned that they thought the frosting was too sweet. So I added powdered sugar until the sweetness matched my desire for sweet but it was kind of goopy- not the beautiful icing in the photo. I know I could have added more powdered sugar to help the texture but then I would have pushed it into the "too sweet" category. Even after refrigeration, it was too wet. Does anyone know of something I could add to change the consistency but not the sweetness?
